Orientation certificates in secondary teaching: AOA, AOB, AOC

In francophone Belgium, at the end of the school year and each year of secondary education (from the 2nd to the 6th class), the Board of Studies can decide if a pupil has succeeded, succeeded subject to passing one or more exams, failed or succeeded with limits based on the pupil’s results, the evaluations of the skills gained, and it grants different types of certificate.

- AOA (attestation d'orientation A): Orientation certificate A. A successful year and the pupil moves into the next year without restriction.

- AOB (attestation d'orientation B): Orientation certificate B. A successful year, but the student can only move into the next year with restrictions regarding the department, class and option. In practice that is to say that the student moves to the next year in technical education or vocational education. Otherwise he or she has to repeat their year. As in the third grade, the option cannot be changed and no AOB can be granted in the 5th year.

- AOC (attestation d'orientation C): Orientation certificate C. The year has been failed and the student must retake his or her year.
