hydroxylation

A chemical reaction which consists of adding a hydroxyl group (-OH) to a molecule. In the case of vitamin D, after it has been integrated by means of food for example, it is transported to the liver where it is hydroxylated by the enzyme 25-hydroxylase, which fixes a hydroxyl in the place of the H of carbon 25, forming 25-hydroxy vitamin D also called calcidiol.
