Human Development Index, developed by the Nobel-prize winning Indian economist Amartya Sen and his Pakistani colleague Mahbub ul Haq within the UN Development Programme (UNDP). This index takes into account three criteria: life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rate and gross domestic product. The HDI is thus a figure of between 0 (poverty) and 1 (ideal)
