Zooplankton
|
Animal plankton (in opposition to phytoplankton). It comes to the surface during the night in order to feed on living matter, notably phytoplankton, and then redescends to the depths. This technique allows it to escape predators but also to save energy, the depths being ‘colder’, but this vertical movement also contributes to a mixing (bioturbation) of the different layers of water.
