Histological classification of (pre)cancerous lesions of the cervix

lessions-classificatio

According to the classification, there are 3 grades of dysplasia before the stage of actual cancer:

CIN1 or mild dysplasia: abnormal cells are found in no more than 1/3 of the epithelium
CIN2 or moderate dysplasia: abnormal cells are found in no more than 2/3 of the epithelium
CIN3 or severe dysplasia: abnormal cells can be found up to the full thickness of the epithelium
Invasive carcinoma: invades the dermis after having breached the basal membrane

Cancers of the cervix can belong to two histological types: epidermoid cancer (95%) and adenocarcinoma or glandular cancer (5%).

(*CIN = Cervical Intra-epithelial Neoplasia)
